Aberdelghy Challenge Cup

June 18, 2019

Aberdelghy Golf Course has welcomed over 60 pupils to take part in a unique golfing challenge in their very first Primary School Golf Day on Monday 17th June.

Following the success of a similar model at Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council’s other golfing facility, Castlereagh Hills Golf Course, the aim of the event was to promote physical activity and encourage pupils to trial a new sport.

The event commenced with all children participating in a warm up session held by the Council’s EBA2020 team. The day then swung into action with a schools’ golfing competition, where the children put their newly developed skills to the test to compete in the ‘Aberdelghy Challenge Cup’.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Council’s Leisure & Community Development Committee, Alderman James Tinsley said, “This is the second primary school golf event which I have attended within the last seven days and it is wonderful to see so many young people enjoying a new sport and representing their school in a fun outdoor competition.

“Today’s event at Aberdelghy highlights the Council’s commitment to offer physical activity opportunities for young people across the City, which will hopefully inspire the next generation to get involved in sport and lead a healthier lifestyle.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Domino’s Pizza for kindly sponsoring both golf days at Castlereagh Hills and Aberdelghy. Finally I would like to thank the teachers for supporting today’s event and I look forward to seeing the ‘Aberdelghy Challenge Cup’ becoming an annual event on the school calendar.”

The best girl award was won by Sarah Crookshanks from Killowen Primary School while the best boy was won by Daniel McNamara from St Joseph’s Primary School. St Joseph’s Primary School (team 1) took 1st place in the eagerly awaited school team award with Killowen Primary School (team 1) following closely behind in 2nd place and St Joesph’s Primary School (team 2) achieving 3rd place.

Event sponsor, Domino’s Pizza, Longstone Street, Lisburn were delighted to support the event. Christine McReynolds, Marketing Manager commented, “We are extremely delighted to this year sponsor both events at Aberdelghy Golf Course and Castlereagh Hills Golf Course.  It is important that we all take the necessary steps to encourage young people to get active and maintain a balanced lifestyle. I have enjoyed meeting the children and teachers today and watching the action on the course.”
